Thanks for giving a mostly sleepy sports night a jolt, Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers quarterback and back-to-back NFL MVP put his heart into an Instagram post Monday that maybe hinted at him retiring . . . or him being traded . . . or him just feeling blue about having no football for the next few months . . . or him just wanting to yank people’s chains again.
Using the hashtag #MondayNightGratitude, Rodgers thanked teammates, coaches and his former (and maybe future?) fiancee Shailene Woodley for what they have done for him this past season and in his career.
“To my teammates, past and current, you are the icing on the beautiful cake we call our job; football. The friendships that we have will transcend our collective time in this game and I am so thankful for the role that each of you have played in making my life that much better,” he wrote. “I love you guys, and cherish the memories we’ve made.
“To everyone else, (s)pread love and gratitude you beautiful people, and read a book once in a while too while you’re at it. Love and peace.”
The post continues the drama over Rodgers’ future in Green Bay. Last offseason, he appeared open to being traded amid conflict with general manager Brian Gutekunst. Rodgers stayed and turned in one of his best seasons before the Packers lost in the NFC divisional round to the 49ers.
He spoke recently of an improved relationship with Gutekunst, but there remains uncertainty over whether he will be back for an 18th season in Green Bay.
Rodgers is signed through the 2022 season, with a $46.66 million cap hit and $26.8 million in potential dead cap. His contract will void seven days prior to the 2023 league season, according to Spotrac.com.
The 2022 league season begins at 4 p.m. ET March 16 but teams are able to discuss trades now.
Rodgers told reporters after he received his latest MVP trophy (No. 4) at NFL Honors on Feb. 9 that he didn’t “fear retirement” or “moving on,” once more keeping people guessing as to what’s next.
Maybe he’ll end the guessing game Tuesday during an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show.” He sure gave everyone a juicy cliffhanger leading into that interview.
